On March 1, 2022, the MGMA Government Affairs team hosted a webinar providing an overview of the requirements related to the uninsured or self-pay good faith estimate (GFE) requirements. The uninsured and self-pay GFE requirements were passed as part of the No Surprises Act and took effect on Jan. 1, 2022.

All providers, regardless of clinical setting are required to furnish GFEs to uninsured or self-pay patients upon request and/or upon the scheduling of services. During the webinar, the GA team discussed how “uninsured” and “self-pay” patients are defined, the required timeline and content for the GFEs, and the patient-provider dispute resolution process and how dispute resolution entities will determine the final payment amount for services.
