Project Summary
Two divisions in an academic multi-hospital system, plastic surgery and ophthalmology of Healthline Medical Group (HMG), are experiencing growth and are challenged to maintain low operational costs. Currently, these divisions are providing service in six locations. The Director of Specialty Operations was assigned to provide a business plan to combine two surgical specialties into one location. The goal is to create efficiency and improve overall operations and finance. The Director is proposing and seeking approval from the system leadership to co-locate Plastic Surgery and Ophthalmology into shared office space. Approval is sought for buildup costs that will be incorporated into the lease, which will be sustainable with anticipated future growth. Physician leaders and the management team will play a significant role in keeping the operational and academic identity for each specialty. It is anticipated that additional providers will be recruited over the next three years. The President and the Vice-President (VP) of operations of HMG are on board with this vision. Evaluation of a site five miles from the main hospital campus with easy on/off highway access is currently ongoing. This business plan will provide system leadership with a recommendation to lease new space with square footage needed for current operations as well as future growth. The plan will include a re-organization recommendation, capital needs for furniture, medical equipment and marketing as well as a review of the financial impact on both divisions.
