MGMA · MPE22: Everything You Need to Know About MGMA's Leaders Conference in Boston

    Listen and Subscribe

MGMA’s Medical Practice Excellence Leaders Conference, held Oct. 9-12 in Boston, promises to offer a wide-ranging array of speakers and networking opportunities.

Craig Wiberg, senior manager of digital events at MGMA, spoke with senior editor Daniel Williams about some of the upcoming conference highlights, plus some insider information to make the most out of your time in the historic city and all of the focused networking opportunities available.

Editor’s note: The following Q&A has been edited for length and clarity.

Q: Tell us what the Leaders Conference is all about.

A: We use the acronym MPE, and I think it starts there. That stands for medical practice excellence. Everything that we do, we’re trying to bring data-driven solutions to leaders of medical practices. Those range from small, privately-owned practices all the way through large system-owned practices. We’ve really leaned into education that focuses on leadership. We’re talking about things that move beyond straight-up operations and financial.

For our conferences, we focus on three main pillars of content: We’ve got networking right at the very top, and then we have the education piece – when we choose those, we want them to be evidence-based, we want them to come from practitioners. The third stool is our solution providers and our partners. They offer a lot of great and interesting ways to solve problems, so we don’t always have to do it by ourselves.

We have a lot of targeted and focused networking. We find that’s really important to build with people that are … building a foundation of ‘Who I am and what I’m going to be in my career.’ So we want to provide ample opportunities for them to do that. One is the cohort experience. We’re building cohorts on the type of practice you’re in: privately-owned, 25 or fewer physician practices, physician-owned practices. And then we have a cohort for academic practices and military people. The first thing we want to do is get you in that room with people who share similar issues. That’s the first thing we’re doing at 2:30pm on Sunday afternoon.

Q: One of the people I am really excited about seeing in person is Kevin Brown. What are some of the sessions you’re most excited about?

A: Kevin is awesome – he gets it. He’s going to be talking about the hero effect. I also talked with our Wednesday keynote mainstage speaker, Neil Parischa. He talks about the happiness effect. He’s got a great blog out there and a great podcast. He’s got some tools to help bring joy and happiness to your practice.

Our own leader, (MGMA president and CEO) Halee Fischer-Wright (MD, MMM, FAAP, FACMPE) is going to lead a panel on Monday night, talking about the issues, the challenges and the solutions (healthcare leaders are facing). That one’s going to be really good, because you guys are going to be hearing from your peers about what they did. As we asked as part of the process of planning, it came out that you wanted to be informed, educated and inspired, so those are the things we built our mainstage speakers around.

Q: Boston is truly one of the great cities in the U.S. What are a few suggestions you have for our audience, after hours or after the networking sessions?

A: The list is long and amazing. There’s the Freedom Trail, that’s incredible. But there’s a couple of cool spots that I would encourage you to check out. One that’s within walking distance of the hotel is Legal Seafood, right on the harbor – some awesome seafood very close. There’s also a section of town (the North End) that is famous for Italian food as well that’s a five-minute Uber-ride away. I strongly encourage a tour of Fenway Park, it is always right up there for you baseball fans.

Q: On November 8th through the 10th, we’re also going to be having our DX conference. We better define what that is.

A: DX stands for digital experience. We wanted to (go) beyond just a series of webinars that are back to back. We wanted to make an experience … to feel like you’re at an event. We’re bringing so much of this great content that we’re delivering in Boston, and we’re bringing it to your doorstep. Everyone who attends in Boston automatically gets access to this (and it's available to others interested as well). So if you’re in a concurrent series (in person) and you can’t decide which one to go to, you’ll have access to it, starting on Nov. 8. Again, it’s data driven, it’ll help you make decisions. It’s proven solutions.
