In this episode of the MGMA Insights Podcast, host Daniel Williams speaks with Don Balasa, JD, MBA, CEO, and Legal Counsel of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Balasa offers in-depth knowledge on the evolving role of medical assistants, the legal landscape surrounding their practice, and strategies for integrating them effectively into healthcare teams. This discussion provides actionable insights for medical practice leaders to optimize their operations and enhance patient care.

    Practical Takeaways for Medical Practices

    1. Leverage Medical Assistants for Enhanced Patient Communication

Medical assistants serve as a vital link between patients and providers. Balasa highlights, "Medical assistants are intermediaries between patients and providers." Their training equips them with superior communication skills, enabling them to relay medical instructions clearly and effectively, thereby improving patient understanding and adherence to treatment plans.

    2. Adapt to the Evolving Role of Medical Assistants

The role of medical assistants has shifted significantly from balancing clinical and administrative duties to more specialized functions. "Medical assistants are now working in multiple provider offices, multi-specialty clinics, and large health systems," notes Balasa. Practices should recognize these changes and utilize medical assistants to their full potential, whether in clinical or administrative capacities.

    3. Embrace New Roles and Specializations

Medical assistants are increasingly taking on specialized roles such as patient navigator, care coordinator, and population health manager. Balasa explains, "More medical assistants are advancing within the profession by taking on new roles." These roles leverage their comprehensive education and flexibility, allowing practices to better meet diverse patient needs.

    4. Understand Legal Scope and State-Specific Regulations

Understanding and navigating the legal landscape is crucial for effectively utilizing medical assistants. Balasa states, "Providers are wanting to delegate an increasing number of advanced tasks to medical assistants." However, state laws vary, and it is important to know what tasks medical assistants can legally perform in your state. The AAMA provides resources and advisory services to help practices remain compliant.

    5. Utilize Medical Assistants in Telemedicine

Telemedicine has expanded the scope of practice for medical assistants. Balasa explains, "The CMS chronic care management program classifies medical assistants as both clinical staff and auxiliary personnel." Medical assistants can perform tasks such as data collection and providing support services remotely, under general supervision. This flexibility is advantageous in the evolving telehealth landscape.

    6. Address Staffing Challenges with Upward Mobility

With ongoing staffing shortages, offering medical assistants opportunities for growth and development is essential. Balasa advises, "Medical assistants should be utilized to the top of their education and credentialing." Providing clear career pathways and professional development opportunities can enhance job satisfaction and retention.

    7. Promote Continuing Education and Certification

Continuing education and certification are vital for maintaining high standards in medical assisting. Balasa emphasizes the importance of the CMA (AAMA) credential, which requires recertification every 60 months. "The certifying board of the AAMA offers the certified medical assistant or CMA (AAMA), which is nationally recognized," he states. Encouraging staff to pursue and maintain certification ensures they remain knowledgeable and competent.

    8. Engage in Professional Networking and Advisory Services

Professional networking and advisory services can provide valuable support for medical assistants and their employers. The AAMA offers an annual conference, continuing education sessions, and a newly launched advisory service. Balasa mentions, "The advisory service offers presentations, fact-finding sessions, and expert recommendations." These resources help practices optimize their operations and stay current with industry trends.

    Episode Wrap-Up

Balasa's insights offer practical strategies for integrating and optimizing the role of medical assistants in healthcare practices. By leveraging their communication skills, adapting to evolving roles, understanding legal regulations, and promoting continuing education, practices can enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
