    Volunteer Roles: ACMPE Forum Representative

Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

My initial involvement was simply related to the ACMPE certification. Once I achieved that designation and realized how much I already knew, I wanted to encourage others to seek certification by helping them understand that they already knew much of the material too. It is fulfilling to share knowledge and help others grow in their roles and help them achieve advancement.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering for MGMA?

Volunteering for MGMA is fulfilling as I help others achieve their goals. It has also afforded me the opportunity to connect with other MGMA members across the country. This would not have happened if I had not stepped up to volunteer.

How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?

Practice management did not start as a career decision for me. Rather, it was a job opportunity for me upon relocating. I started as an accountant and was fortunate enough to work for a couple of great leaders at Meridian Health, who allowed me to grow and learn all beyond just accounting including practice management.

What is the best tip you give to people who are just starting a career in practice management?

Say yes when anyone asks you if you want to learn something new. Take on extra responsibility for what you can learn from it. Stretch outside of your comfort zone. Read, read, read anything about the industry!

What is your favorite book or website or resource for practice managers?

My favorite source of information is the MGMA Washington Update. These updates provide a concise summary of possible changes to legislation, actual legislation and always includes the impact on practice management. I also read the MGMA Connections, AMGA Practice Journal and ACHE Healthcare Executive magazine. I am also on several email lists for employer news specific to wellness and benefit plans.

How do you relax after a busy work week?

My family is my solace from work and help me refocus at the end of the workday. I try to make time for the things that I enjoy like outdoor activities even if it is just working in my yard. I also enjoy reading action/adventure fiction novels.

What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?

Learning the value of work/life balance has been a journey for me. I have finally figured out that enjoying my family and embracing time away from work helps me to focus and better engage when I am at work. With the occasional necessary exception, I turn off my work phone and computer when I am out of the office.  It is the unblended separation of work and home that allows me to appreciate both.
