    Volunteer Roles:
    State Liaison
Job Title: Senior Healthcare Consultant, Health e Practices

Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

I was guided by great mentors who were deeply involved in MGMA and Oregon MGMA.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering for MGMA?

I appreciate the opportunities to network with and learn from my peers. It is important for us to remember we are not alone even though our jobs can feel isolating sometimes.

How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?

I started my career in optical retail and moved into medical billing. Later, while managing the business office of an ambulatory surgery center I saw the tremendous opportunities managers have to lead and influence those who provide excellent patient care every day and I wanted to develop my own skills to shape employee engagement and care outcomes.

What is your favorite book, website or resource for practice managers?

I reference the MGMA website regularly for trusted information on current issues and as I work with physicians starting new practices I frequently recommend the Operating Policies and Procedures Manual for Medical Practices because it creates such a strong foundation.

What is the best tip you give to people who are just starting a career in practice management?

Get your CMPE certification! The knowledge I gained from the Body of Knowledge study guides and the in-person study groups with my peers prepared me well for all of my different healthcare leadership roles.

How do you relax after a busy week?

I enjoy flatwater kayaking and gardening.

What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?

Consciously plan your day by utilizing your calendar and task list effectively. I use the tools in Outlook to organize all my emails, tasks and appointments and I take time each day to plan and organize the work I have to do. This helps me feel in control and more accomplished at the end of the day.
