    Job: Senior Consultant

Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

I joined MGMA for the networking and educational opportunities.  I began volunteering in 1993; for the MA/RI MGMA.  Since then I served on many committees including five years on the board (five different roles); working my way up to chapter President. In 2014 I earned my ACMPE.  It was a pivotal career moment.  Subsequently, I started volunteering at the national level including Abstract Reviewer, Essay Grader and for the last several years I have served on the Fellowship papers committee. I love seeing the papers/business plans transition from outline to completion. Building the Body of Knowledge is a great way to give back and add credibility to the work we do. I have also volunteered the last two years at the Fellowship informational sessions.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering for MGMA?

It’s most definitely, the friends I have made over the years within National MGMA and MA/RI MGMA.  We have a close-knit group and I can always count on someone to help me out; and know I would do the same for them without any hesitation.

How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?

Attending the MGMA meetings and earning my Fellowship helped me realize that this is not just a job but a career path that I would enjoy.

What is the best tip you give to people who are just starting a career in practice management?

My tip is to never stop learning.  Continuous learning is essential to be the best you can be.  As a consultant and “change agent,” I work with many clients and organizations.  It’s important to learn as much as you can before you move forward with a plan.  If you “solutionize” too early you may miss important points.

What is your favorite book or website or resource for practice managers?

That is an easy question, I love anything written by Elizabeth Woodcock or Debra Walker Keegan.  I have them all!  At work we have a virtual book club and we are challenged to learn through the book club experience.  I just started reading “The Lost Art of Listening” by Michael Nichols, Ph.D.

How do you relax after a busy week?

As a Revenue Cycle & Operations Consultant for Impact Advisors my work week starts on Sunday afternoon, when I fly from Boston to California to spend the week with my client.  I fly home on Thursday night.  Weekends tend to be action packed.  Friday night is date night at our favorite sushi restaurant.  We enjoy eating out, trying new wines, getting together with friends and family, and travel.  The hotel and airline miles I earn while working are a perk!  When I am not with my hubby, I am typically home in my craft room making cards to recognize the milestones of my family and friends.  People tell me they save them. I also love attending country music concerts.

What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?

Work will always be there!  Enjoy time with family and friends, sadly nothing is nothing is forever.
