    Volunteer Role: State Liaison

Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

Once I achieved Fellowship, I decided it was time to give back to the organization that helped me over the years. That’s when I inquired about becoming a State Liaison. Doing so has allowed me the opportunity to visit other states and attend their conferences and perhaps offer suggestions or come away with ideas for my home state.  I’ve enjoyed visiting the states assigned to me and talking to managers about becoming certified or obtaining Fellowship. With the changing environment in health care, I believe it’s even more important to have some type of credential.

How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?

When I became employed at Consultants in Gastroenterology many years ago I was an office nurse, an LPN. After several years I decided to go back to college in the evening to become an RN, asking for understanding from the physicians when the time came for clinicals. That time never came. After completing my first course and ready to sign up for the second, I was approached by a doctor asking me to be their Administrator. It was a small practice at the time with twelve employees. After giving it some thought, I made the decision to accept the challenge. I then took a management class to help me prepare for my new role. Little did I know this was the path life was taking me, but one that has been very rewarding.  The practice has grown significantly both structurally and now with a staff of 110 over the years.

I immediately became involved with our local medical management chapter to gain more knowledge. The interaction with other managers was vital to my growth as a leader. Serving on the board in various capacities gave me the confidence and ability to lead and learn from others.  Our chapter then became a part of National MGMA which provided additional resources.  The sessions at conference and the networking have been instrumental to my success.

How do you relax after a busy work week?

Early in my career, it was difficult for me to relax after a long day’s work. I had responsibilities at home, but my mind kept working.  Over the years I enjoy spending time with my grandkids and going to their activities and at times have found time to scrapbook, needlework and read.  My husband and I enjoy traveling to different parts of the United States. It helps to get away and come back refreshed to tackle anything that may occur.
