    Volunteer Role: Student Ambassador

Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

I was excited to get involved with MGMA because I believe in their mission to empower healthcare practices and professionals to create meaningful change in healthcare.  MGMA educates and empowers me to be the best healthcare professional I can be and allows me to interact with others who are also inspired by the MGMA mission.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering for MGMA?

As an MHA student, I loved that I was able to interact with current professionals from around the country and learn from their experiences in the healthcare industry.  Being able to attend classes and sessions while at the MGMA Annual Conference was a true privilege.

What excites you about medical practice management?

Medical practice management has so many opportunities to really touch and improve healthcare, whether it be for the patient, the provider, or the business.

What is your favorite book or website or resource for emerging professionals in the healthcare field?

I recently read "Dopesick" by Beth Macy, which is about the opioid epidemic in America.  Because the misuse and overprescription of opioids is a national crisis, it's important for healthcare professionals to be informed on how we got to this point and what is presently happening.

Other good books for emerging healthcare professionals include "Finding Allies, Building Alliances" by Mike Leavitt and Rich McKeown, which is about the 8 elements that bring and keep people together and "Influencer" by Joseph Grenny, Kerry Patterson, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler, which is an excellent book about leading change.

How do you relax after a busy work week?

In case it wasn't clear by the previous answer, I love to read to relax!  I also like seeing a movie at Megaplex theaters because they have this amazing Cheetos popcorn (I pretend it's healthy so long as I get the small size).

What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?

When I'm assigned a project to do, I start to work on it well before the deadline.  That way, when life comes up (social events, illness, personal appointments), I can focus on those completely instead of just stressing over and thinking about work the whole time.
