This purpose of this paper is to provide a review of existing literature on the topic of physician burnout. It is also to discuss the history, causes and effects on different physician demographics as well as failed remedies for burnout. Most importantly, the author will explore healthcare organizations and their shared responsibility to address physician burnout with the medical staff and some of the unique approaches available to restore physicians’ productivity,
secure their retention to the organization and increase their engagement.
