On July 25, 2022, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) and the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) issued a proposed rule updating protections under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (“Section 1557”), which establishes nondiscrimination protections for patients. This proposed rule follows a 2020 final rule, released under the previous administration, which rolled back several of the nondiscrimination protections in place.
