Why Board Certification through ACMPE?

The Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) credential, administered through the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE), has set the industry standard for more than 60 years as the most significant benchmark of ability and experience in medical practice management. Board Certification credentials are developed and evaluated by your peers to ensure that the standards are relevant, rigorous, and specifically tied to competencies outlined in the six domains of the Body of Knowledge (BOK) that are necessary to drive medical practice success.

Achieving Board Certification serves as a credible demonstration of your level of knowledge or a skillset related to the principles of the Body of Knowledge for medical practice management and the application of those principles to real-life situations and scenarios in healthcare, along with the knowledge to successfully manage all aspects of a medical practice.

How do you get started?

1. Choose a pathway that fits your experience and education:
   1. Pathway 1: 2+ healthcare experience, hold a Bachelor's Degree or have completed 120 college credit hours
   2. Pathway 2 (students/early careerists): May be currently completing 2+ healthcare experience with less than 3 years’ time left to complete*, or may be currently completing your Bachelor's Degree or have completed 120 college credit hours with less than 3 years’ time left to complete*
   3. Pathway 3: 6+ healthcare experience, four of which must be in healthcare management or a healthcare leadership role
2. MGMA Membership is required. Purchase your ACMPE Board Certification application (on this page).
3. Once your application is purchased, you will receive a confirmation email with access to your application through your MGMA Dashboard under ACMPE Tracking. This is where you will complete your application.
4. Once your application fee and completed form are received and your eligibility is verified, we will contact you by email within 10 business days to confirm your acceptance into the program as a Nominee. If it is determined that you do not meet the eligibility requirements, you will be refunded your application fee minus a $25 processing fee.
5. Once accepted, you are required to meet the following requirements:
   1. Purchase and pass the multiple-choice exam
   2. Purchase and pass scenario-based exam*
   3. Earn 50 continuing education (CE) hours, which may be completed up to three years prior to application purchase date and onwards
      1. Of the 50, 30 must come from MGMA and its affiliates, and of the 30 from MGMA, 12 must be from a LIVE delivery format
6. You will receive Board Approval after all requirements are met. You can complete exams and continuing education in any order.
7. You have three years from your application PURCHASE date to complete your Board Certification requirements before needing to reapply.
