Tennessee MGMA Strategic Plan 2021-2022
For 2021, the repercussions of the COVID‐19 global pandemic continued to complicate and challenge
overall organizational operations. Choosing to see these challenges as opportunities, TMGMA made
every effort to evaluate, change, and adapt to circumstances while providing member benefits that
would prosper TMGMA and our members.
Our Mission Statement, “TMGMA is the Authoritative Leader in the profession of Medical Practice
Management. We provide resources through education, mentoring, networking, and advocacy.” is at
the forefront of all decision making and all we have accomplished throughout the year.
Continue Mentoring and Networking – We held a “first time attendee” breakfast at our Spring
Conference. Executive Council members and ACMPE Forum Representative attend the breakfast to
ensure our new attendees are getting acclimated to the conference. The networking does not stop at
breakfast. The Leadership Committee and seasoned members attend sessions and social events with the
new attendees. Every effort is made to introduce new attendees to members as they interact
throughout the conference.
Our mentoring program, Peer to Peer Initiative, has become a permanent benefit for medical managers in our state and the participation rate continues to grow. We are anxious to see what growth this initiative achieves as we continue to market it through testimonials and at our conferences.
Continue expanding communications with our membership and attracting new members. TMGMA’s website is the hub for current information and is updated weekly with job postings, sharing MGMA’s Washington Connection and member benefits. TMGMA partners with a local social media company to assist with making regular posts to our Facebook page. In exchange for their services, TMGMA provides the company with a complimentary booth in our exhibit hall. To communicate with more medical practice professionals, we participate in a member list exchange with our local chapters and MGMA. A list serve is available for our membership to connect and network. This tool has been an excellent resource for our members to access timely information from their peers. TMGMA is also active on LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram.
Attracting New Members was identified early in the year as a potential challenge. We conducted our
annual member survey to better define our membership population. As the landscape in the medical
management profession changes due to mergers and acquisitions, our survey revealed a decline in our
membership from smaller physician owned practices. Our member survey indicated 58% independent
practices, 16% hospital owned, and 26% were other. To provide relevant education for all members, we
developed two tracks for our Spring Conference education. General Sessions provide leadership skills
for all members. Breakout sessions provide two options. One offers education for hands on smaller practices, the other provides in‐depth education for large practice administrators and CEOs. The Executive Council compiled a list of 63 C‐suite executives and initiated a direct mail marketing campaign to encourage organizational membership and conference attendance. In 2021, we added two new organizational members and grew our membership 13%. With all the uncertain times, we were delighted to see our membership increase and are optimistic about our future growth.
Survey responses came from members representing each of our ten local chapters and identified five
members who are interested in serving on the Executive Council or a committee. Overall, the
information received has been extremely beneficial. The top five rated member benefits revealed from
the survey in order are webinars, networking with peers, spring conference, legislative updates, and fall
conference. We obtained major “topics of interest/concern” to members as well as approximately 70%
of survey respondents are members of MGMA.
Continue focus on our ten Local Chapters. We continue to educate the local chapters on their Affiliation Agreement and the benefits of participation with the state and national MGMA. Our message is one of support, encouragement, and participation. The emphasis is “TMGMA is a resource for local chapters”. We host monthly local chapter leadership conference calls. These calls provide information on current and timely topics as well as promote participation in MGMA’s STAT, MGMA’s annual Salary Survey, ACMPE, and Day on The Hill. A pre‐conference dinner to honor the local chapter leadership was held at the 2021 Spring Conference. This event gives leadership an opportunity to mentor and network with each other. Developing relationships with local chapter leadership continues to be the goal while
knowing they are one of the keys to making our state organization stronger.
We continue to focus on educational opportunities for our members by providing free monthly webinars. Webinars focus on the domains of the Body of Knowledge. Through marketing efforts, we saw an increase in member participation in 2021. TMGMA’s webinar on September 14, 2021 was a MGMA Washington Update presented by Drew Voytal.
Additional educational opportunities: Based on our member survey, over 87% of members employers
support their attendance at a TMGMA conference. TMGMA held two scheduled face‐to‐face
conferences in 2021. TMGMA’s 2021 Spring Conference, Got Directions? Becoming Leaders of Change was held on April 14‐16, 2021 at the Park Vista Hotel in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. There were 98
attendees and 33 Sponsors and Exhibitors. TMGMA’s 2021 Fall Conference, Path to the Future was held on September 16‐17, 2021 at The Westin Chattanooga in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There were 91
attendees and 41 Sponsors and Exhibitors.
TMGMA’s Legislative Liaison Misty Hickman, FACMPE works diligently with the Tennessee Medical Association and MGMA Government Affairs. Misty participates in monthly calls with TMA to determine what bills need advocacy from constituents. She has coordinated a committee with members from our local chapters. Misty is instrumental in sending out Call to Action emails to members when national or state bills need additional support. Misty provides monthly reports on our monthly Leadership calls and writes a bi‐monthly Legislative Update article for TMGMA’s newsletter.
Continue focus on ACMPE Certification and Fellowship. During a summer Executive Council retreat, a decision was made to place additional emphasis, support, and recognition for those seeking ACMPE Certification and Fellowship. Through the Past President’s Scholarship Fund, we are awarding those who become certified or obtain fellowship with a free Spring or Fall conference registration.
TMGMA’s ACMPE Forum Representative DeAnna Brown, FACMPE writes regular articles for our bimonthly newsletter and promotes ACMPE via phone calls and emails. Based on our member survey, 10% of respondents were not familiar with certification and were interested in learning about it. The survey revealed that 14% were interested in becoming a Fellow, but they were not able to pursue it at this time. DeAnna has had direct communication with these members. In 2021, TMGMA had 1 new Certified member and 1 new Fellow. Spring Conference 2021 offered a workshop with DeAnna and Karen Bowman, FACMPE, CPC, CPMA presenting the path to fellowship training, ACMPE Prep Course and Mock Exam.

TMGMA revamped our Student membership and marketing to develop resident training opportunities with Erlanger Health System and the UT College of Medicine, Chattanooga Tennessee. The Director of Primary Care and two medical residents attended TMGMA’s 2021 Fall Conference. We have met with the head of the department to determine how we can work together to further develop the relationship for resident physicians attending conferences and providing other medical practice management and leadership opportunities for resident members. TMGMA believes attracting and introducing residents/students now will provide a foundation for future membership in a MGMA organization. TMGMA looks forward to the growth and development of this opportunity and concept. TMGMA is committed to building a strong Executive Council and Leadership Committee. To accomplish this, we have monthly conference calls, five face to face meetings per year which includes a Summer planning retreat and a Fall Leadership Committee orientation. We capitalize on this event by educating our Executive Council and Leadership Committee at the beginning of their term with the thought they will become stronger leaders for the organization.
