Quality & Patient Experience

Health Information Technology

The Family Medicine journal recently published a time-motion study that measured the duration of direct and indirect patient care, including time spent in various EHR duties, for faculty and residents in 10 family medicine residency programs. On average, providers spent 35.8 minutes per patient encounter on face-to-face and EHR activities, including time spent out of the clinic completing documentation.

The study authors note “The majority of family physicians worked through lunch, stayed late at clinic, or took their work home to complete the day’s EHR work.”

A matrix that details encounter time based on patient demographics, patient acuity and provider experience is published in the study.
