According to a recent HIMSS Analytics study State of Clinical Communication and Workflow, approximately 75% of surveyed healthcare providers use their mobile health devices for HIPAA compliant secure messaging. The study goes on to say that on 30 percent of providers use it for mobile access to patient data. Even fewer providers utilize mHealth for advanced capabilities such as communication clinical workflow management and assignment management.
“From what I see in the survey results, it looks like the primary use of mobile clinical communications solutions today is texting and other forms of communications, versus leveraging ‘smart’ capabilities — like easier access to patient data, that are available today,” said Joyce Sensmeier, MS, RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN, Vice President of Informatics for HIMSS North America.
Even though providers are not using mHealth to its fullest potential, there is a strong desire to optimize their platforms to yield better clinical, financial and operational outcomes.
