Medical Practice Excellence: Leaders Conference

Why Attend

10/09 at 12:00 PM to 10/12/2022 at 12:00 PM

How to strategically plan your next strategic plan

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

Abraham Lincoln did not say that, but somebody did. That somebody, according to Quote Investigator, was an anonymous woodsman quoted in a 1956 book about agricultural education, and the woodsman said minutes, not hours.

Ascribing the quote to Honest Abe seems unnecessary since the wisdom of it is obvious. When it comes to strategic planning, you have a simple choice: wing it or win it.

To make a plan, you have to have a plan

Planning is a process. To repeat: planning is not magic, it is a process. And it’s one of the most important processes for leaders to master.

Mastering the process is the subject of “Steps for Success In Strategic Planning and Leading Change”, to be presented at the Medical Practice Excellence: Leaders Conference in Boston, Massachusetts (Oct. 9-12, 2022), by Stephen A. Dickens, JD, M.A.Ed., FACMPE, Vice President, Medical Practice Services, at SVMIC.

Steve will take us through the common-sense—but too often overlooked—ingredients in a perfect plan, including how to ensure baseline factors are understood by all the stakeholders and how any good plan must connect to mission and vision.

Rules to ensure all voices are heard

Gathering all the stakeholders around the table to analyze data and make decisions for the group is one of the most significant hurdles in the strategic planning process. It is essential all parties come with an open mind and speak it. The challenge is in dealing with those who unintentionally, or intentionally, suck the air out of the room and dominate the conversation or, on the other hand, those who would rather look at the wall or their shoes.

To this end, Steve will cover how to build positive and working relationships so that trust and good faith relationships are established and sustained. These simple, everyday steps are essential, and they require commitment, deliberateness, and consistency across the organization.

Finally, Steve will teach us the five essential steps toward establishing a plan that will stick and will allow your practice to flourish. Here’s a preview:

Join us in Boston and become the master of your next strategic plan, or you may not get where you want to go. Consider these wise words:

“You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going because you might not get there.”

Yogi Berra did say that.

Now is the perfect time to register for the Medical Practice Excellence: Leaders Conference in Boston, October 9-12, 2022, and at the Digital Experience (DX), November 8-10, 2022. The MGMA Community would love to see you!
