MGMA Poll Shows Strong Opposition to Government Mandated APMs

WASHINGTON, DC – In a new Oct. 20 MGMA Stat poll, 76% of respondents voiced opposition to the government requiring participation in alternative payment models (APMs). MGMA appreciates efforts from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to increase participation in APMs, but is concerned with recent announcements calling for more mandatory models.

Statement attributable to Anders Gilberg, Senior Vice President, MGMA Government Affairs:

"MGMA has strongly and consistently supported the healthcare system moving toward the provision of more accountable, coordinated care. Our members have embraced the opportunity to participate in APMs that test innovative payment and service delivery reforms. However, MGMA maintains that CMS must incentivize, rather than mandate, participation in APMs. Joining an APM is an important decision best made by the group practice, not the government. It is wrong to assume all group practices across the country can succeed in and benefit from the same payment model. Rather than rely on a government mandate to increase participation in APMs, CMS should focus on broadening the scope of models being tested, providing appropriate incentives, offering sufficient support, and leveraging input from physicians and group practices.”
