An extensive project to define the leadership competencies in health care has created a leadership competency directory comprising 300 competencies within five domains. Each year the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and its standardsetting and certification body, the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE), celebrate extraordinary achievements in the medical practice management field. The Associations bestow awards on select individuals and an organization that have made exceptional contributions to the profession. MGMA CONNEXION spoke with the 2006 recipients of the Harry J. Harwick Lifetime Achievement Award, the Medical Practice Executive of the Year Award, the Physician Executive of the Year Award, the Fred Graham Award for Innovation in Improving Community Health, and the Edward B. Stevens Article of the Year Award to learn what motivates and inspires them. The awards constitute the ACMPE Honors Program, the official awards program of MGMA.
